Yesterday I briefly commented on the differences between conservatism in Sweden and on Ireland (some discussions that are no longer current in Sweden may be in Ireland and vice versa, was my argument). And when talking about Ireland, how can one not be reminded of the tragic potato monoculture incident that led up to the potato famine of 1845? Close to my heart and related to potatos and monocultures are plant breeders' rights, a type of intellectual property right that is close to patent rights but applicable only to plants varieties ("varieties" like the ones illustrated below). The right entails a 20 or 25 year long protection "term" within which you are the only plant breeder who are allowed to retail your particular type of plant variety. Just as patents, it protects the rights holder from having other people continue "breeding" on their particular plant variety for commercial purposes.

Svenska dagbladet har en ny ledarskribent, ingen av vars ledare jag läst för jag tycker att de verkar ointressanta. Jag tycker heller inte att det verkar särskilt intressant att opponera sig mot dem, på det sätt t ex Lisa Magnusson eller Johan Norberg har gjort. Den sortens superkonservativa åsiktsbildning går inte riktigt att säga någonting om.

- Varför det då?
- Jag upplever mig själv och mitt andliga liv som för komplicerat för att ha kunnat uppstå av godtyckligt, naturligt urval.

Vad ska man säga liksom? Antingen upplever man sig själv som för komplicerad och unik för att kunna vara en del av ett ekosystem, eller så gör man inte det. Resultatet av att argumentera emot blir dessutom ointressant.

- Vissa människor är helt enkelt desajnade så att de blir bättre än andra.
- Nej, det är de inte.
- Jo, det är de.
- Nej, det är de inte.
- Jo, det är de.

Svårbegripligast blir resonemangen när man försöker dra in vetenskapen i en diskussion som faktiskt inte alls har med vetenskap att göra.

Efter att ha sett Emma Opassandes gästblogg hos Anna Troberg fattar jag plötsligt varför Dagens Arenas Anna Hedberg skrivit om moraldomstolen och "politiker [som förr] hängdes ut för vidlyftigt taxiåkande på skattebetalarnas bekostnad [har bytts ut av] kokain som i dag får kvällspressen att slösa med trycksvärtan. [D]en som inte delar moralpaniken indirekt gör sig skyldig till knarkliberalism."

Eller.... Ondska!!

Drakar, i bemärkelsen tidningar och media, kan vara knepiga. Även om man kan ursäkta mycket av vad drakar skriver och rapporterar (om våld, om sex, om människors privatliv) med marknadsmekanismer ("vi publicerar vad folk vill läsa" och "what's in the public interest is not necessarily in the interest of the public" är två talande och ett smart citat om media, det senare hämtat från Terry Pratchetts bok The Truth där William de Worde far in i Ankh-Morpork med blottläggande av makten i sinnet) kan man säkert tänka sig att efterfrågan skulle se annorlunda ut om utbudet var annorlunda.

I nederländska Cosmopolitan anno april 2011 berättar Lies Visschedijk, nederländsk skådespelerska och tillika huvudrollsinnehavare i filmen Gooische vrouwen: de film att hon för allt i livet inte kan begripa hur det kommer sig att hon inte läst klassikern Wuthering Heights av Emily Brontë.

Jag vet förstås varför hon inte läst boken: den är tråkig. Från första sidan till den trettionde (vilket är ungefär så långt jag någonsin orkat ta mig in) är det enda man lyckas se framför sig ett någorlunda tråkigt brungrått fotografi av ett 1900-talsengland utan förlåtande egenskaper. Jämför då med Herman Mellville's Moby Dick, också en tråkig bok, som i alla fall håller läsarens intresse vid liv med löften om enorma och brutala vita valar djupt under havsytan (kapitel 21: Om valens vithet var en av mina milstolpar, äntligen val, tänkte jag, men det visade sig handla om vågskum, snö och andra vita saker som likt valar kan vara skräckinjagande).

Nej, ska man läsa Brontë-böcker finns det ju faktiskt två till att välja mellan och de är båda bättre och mer underhållande än Emily.

Mer underhållande än engelskspråkiga klassiker alla tider är däremot Kalle Anka. Under en orelaterad händelse igår påmindes jag om finska Piratpartiets Joonas Mäkinens imponerande Kalle Anka-samling. Serien är insamlad från och med årtal 1976 och det äldsta exemplaret således runt elva år(!) äldre än både mig och Joonas.

as we were walking down a small street in central Barcelona after having evening tapas. It was October 2009 and we had just had a brief conversation about flatrates and blank media taxes.

Our conversation was held at a time when I was just trying to evaluate the voluntary collective licenses proposed by EFF, and supported by among others the Canadian Association of Songwriters and James Love's association Knowledge Ecology International. It goes as follows: an internet subscriber chooses of his or her own free will to pay a fee to rights holder associations so as to be allowed to download, upload, remix and mix all the music they find like to online without being subjected to the threat of a lawsuit.

Jamie Love was the first person who in very direct terms confronted me with shared culture and information being, yes, socially important and valuable, but also having an economic value. In the sense that culture needs an economic influx.

Det har också Belgacom, Telenet och alla dominerande belgiska aktörer på den belgiska bredbandsmarknaden för i Belgien bryr man sig om hur kunderna upplever tjänsterna. Ilska, frustration och raseri är bara några exempel på typiska kundupplevelser belgiska operatörer bryr sig om på daglig basis.

I Sverige har vi begränsningar på våra mobila uppkopplingar (trafikbegränsningar) liksom i större delen av Europa. I Storbritannien har Telefónicas vänliga dotterbolag O2 till och med frälst användarna med en opt-out porr-blockering så att de inte av misstag ska förledas se så mycket naket att någon ska bli tvungen att ta ansvar för höga/dyra telefonräkningar (det här är en referens till en komedishow av Magnus Betnér om Aftonbladet, telefonräkningar och ansvar).

Ett lågt, men kanske inte oförväntat, drag från Telia här om månaden var att plötsligt börja skjuta in små referenser till att ta extra betalt för "innehåll" som "VoIP-tjänster".

We had a dinner table conversation about the freedom of press and the special Swedish construction of responsible editors yesterday at my house. A responsible editor basically takes the fall (juridically speaking) in the case that the newspaper (as a whole) has published something that was false, slandered someone or otherwise upset the harmony of the world at large. An individual journalist (or cartoonist) is not held accountable in Sweden. On the whole, it's not entirely insane, but is under review for two reasons: a) it's not a very common way of allocating responsibility inside a news corporation in Europe, and b) the way our law protecting press is currently written, it's not technology neutral. But anyway.

We touched upon the subject of insulting police officers. In Germany and Belgium this is apparently very illegal and fineable, in Sweden it's not. Swedish blogger Viktualiebrodern comments that when European police operations become harmonised this is bound to lead to conflicts. "Ihr habt ja nichts im Koppe" (Your heads are empty) = €500 fine (DE); ”Era jävla as, jag hatar er, era jävla fascistjävlar” (Fucking cadavers, I hate you, fucking fascist bastards) = cased dismissed (SE). A Swedish court reasons that in the heat of the moment, people say stupid things and while people should not say stupid things it is not news worthy or punishable that people nevertheless do, and unfortunately even quite often.

The Peruvian Congress has declared free and unrestricted internet access a human right. Free as in gratuito, not as in libre, apparently, and in Spanish there can be no mistake as to whether that concerns beer or speech. The suggestion comes from the center-left party Apra, but is supported by the left government. The President of the Transport Commission Yaneth Cajahuanca says that gratuito should not be interpreted as a future disappearance of rental agreements (monthly fees paid by consumers to get internet access provided), but as the public not making downpayments on infrastructure.

This sounds to me as if the public will not have to invest in infrastructure, which to me appears not too much different from anywhere else. I have yet to determine whether the law also includes a method different from public investment to reach the objective of higher broadband access (currently at 3% of the population).

Further down the gratuito-road is a warning from largest Perúvian telecommunications operator Telefońica dated 2001: AT&T wanted to use Telefonica infrastructure for free (gratuitamente).

I'm reading the book The Rasputin File by Edvard Radzinsky, this mythical man made eternal by Boney M and the October Revolution.

Apparently it's the "remarkable biography of the mystical monk and bizarre philanderer whose role in the demise of the [last of the] Romanov [tsars]" whose blessings of the only son of Tsarina Alexandra Fyodorovna of Hesse led him into a power position where "in all affairs of state he was the man to please".

Edvard Radzinsky does give a more nuanced picture. He points to Tsarina Alix's will to believe, her subsequent joining a monastery together with her daughters, and how not only Grigory Rasputin but also people around her manipulated her and her powerful position by, well, essentially sucking up.

Of course, Grigory Rasputin's role in the demise of the Russian Tsar's Autocracy seems marginal in comparison with the Russian 1905 Uprising which scared the Tsar into signing a new constitution, essentially giving up the autocratic Russian rule against the will of the Orthodox Church and the Tsarina (which is weird since the Tsarina had a "distaste for Russian culture, whether it was the food or the manner of dancing").
